Short-Term Substitute Training
The Regional Office of Education is offering FREE three-hour trainings required for short-term substitute teacher certification.
Prospective substitute teachers must have an Associate’s degree OR have completed 60 or more semester hours of college coursework.
You must complete this training and then you are ready to apply. You will be able to substitute in all grades of public schools, pre-kindergarten through grade 12. A short-term substitute license is valid until June 30, 2028.
Although not required for regular substitute teachers, the training is also open and available to those educators as well.

Book Study: “Every Student, Every Day: A No-Nonsense Nurturer Approach to Reaching All Learners”

This book study is back by popular demand!
No-Nonsense Nurturers are educators who build life-altering relationships, set high expectations, and expect high achievement. This book will share the lessons, mindsets, strategies, and expectations No-Nonsense Nurturers use to support the students they serve and have a classroom where everyone (including the teacher) thrives!
This book study will include coursework on the online platform Teachable. The Teachable coursework will be worth 10 PDH. There will also be two Zoom meetings on June 25 and August 1 @ 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Each Zoom meeting will be an additional 1 PDH each.
This book will be provided through the Area 3 SEL Hub Grant. You MUST fill out the Google Form that will be emailed with your registration confirmation in order to receive this book.

Book Study: “Shifting the Balance: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Upper Elementary Classroom”
The much- awaited “Shifting the Balance” book for upper grades is here! This book delves into the research behind the Science of Reading and the shifts needed in the upper elementary classroom. This book discusses the shifts needed in the areas of comprehension, vocabulary, word reading and fluency instruction.
This book study will include coursework on the online platform Teachable. The Teachable coursework will be worth 10 PDH. There will also be two Zoom meetings on June 26 and August 5 @ 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Each Zoom meeting will be worth an additional 1 PDH.

Writing Across the Curriculum
This is an active workshop where participants will learn a variety of strategies for teaching content-specific language and writing, practicing incorporating them into lesson plans as Bell-Starters/Do-Nows, comprehension checks, and exit slips. Participants will work in groups to share, offer feedback, and make suggestions. Come prepared with a few lesson plans and expect to leave with several new activities ready to use this coming school year.

Lunch & Learn: Strategies for Engaging Students Who Might Be “Too Cool for School”
Engaging adolescent students in the learning process is essential for creating an effective educational environment. In this session, educators will explore innovative strategies and practical techniques to cultivate student engagement in their classrooms.
Designed specifically for junior high and high school educators, this session delves into the unique challenges and opportunities of engaging adolescents in the learning process. Participants will model simple and quick active learning strategies for raising the level of participation in the classroom while making the classroom environment one that fosters collaboration, respect and a sense of belonging.
Participants in this session will engage in hands-on activities, discussions, and collaborative exercises to apply the strategies learned to their own teaching contexts. By the end of the session, educators will leave with a toolkit of practical strategies and actionable insights to create fun, engaging learning experiences for junior high and high school students.

When Reading Comes Alive: Interactive Read Alouds
Whether it’s a chapter book you read together over time, or a picture book you start and finish in one session, interactive read alouds support all levels of literacy development, increase motivation and engagement, and lead to deeper and more meaningful understanding. The Commission on Reading said, “the single most important activity for building knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children,” and the new Illinois Comprehensive Literacy Plan specifically advocates for interactive read alouds. In this session you’ll experience examples of interactive read alouds, then learn how to write your own.

Community Action Poverty Simulation
The Community Action Poverty Simulation breaks down stereotypes by allowing participants to step into the real life situations of others.
Poverty is often portrayed as a stand alone issue – but this simulation allows individuals to walk a month in the shoes of someone who is facing poverty and realize how complex and interconnected issues of poverty really are.
After the experience, individuals then have the opportunity to discuss what they’ve learned with their peers.
The Community Action Poverty Simulation is a tool that helps participants rethink the challenges that millions of low income individuals must face each and every day. More importantly, this tool helps people identify areas of change that can directly impact the effects of poverty on individuals.

Lunch & Learn: Self Awareness and YOUR Role in the Relationship
This session is about the most important person: the adult. The purpose of this session is to help educators understand the importance of self-awareness and the impact they themselves can have when working with children, and families, who have experienced trauma and disrupted attachment relationships. This session will encourage educators to reflect on their ability to be vulnerable, their temperament and their awareness of self, in order to develop their understanding of their role within the healing relationship.

Lunch & Learn: Pain, Power, Purpose: Writing-as-Healing for Students Experiencing Toxic Stress and Trauma
A humanizing approach to educating youth considers opportunities for students to process and heal from individual and collective traumas by telling their story. Research suggests that expressive writing has demonstrated benefits such as decreased stress and depression as well as an increase in resilience. When given multiple entry points to discussing and processing mentally and physically painful events, young people can turn their pain into power, shining light toward a healed future where they use their ways of knowing to be agents of change in their community. The 2023 Illinois Teacher of the Year will share her experience working with young people in an alternative school setting to help them process their lived experiences through poetry of witness and oral storytelling methods in the classroom.

Lunch & Learn: How to Introduce Struggle to the Math Classroom
We will discuss the value of integrating struggle into the math classroom. Several activities will be provided that can introduce struggle across all grade levels, in a way that encourages student engagement without the negative feelings associated with “struggling”.

Punk Rock Teaching
Punk rock teaching is coloring outside of the lines (maybe even outside of the coloring book). It rejects the sage-on-the-stage approach of instruction where the teacher drones on as rows of bored students with glazed eyes stare into space. Just like punk rock music–rebellious, authentic, and a creative reaction to the status quo–punk rock teaching encompasses cutting edge, research-based approaches that energize, motivate, and speak to this unique generation of students and teachers. In this session you’ll experience arts integrated techniques, service learning, Project Based Learning, and more. This session is for educators who want better ways of educating kids, and understand that it’s up to them to make the change!

Assessment is part of our everyday experience, several times each and every day. Assessment also serves as vital means for gauging student learning, guiding instructional strategies, and ultimately, fostering academic growth. However, designing assessments that are rigorous, reliable and fair can be a challenging task for educators, particularly in the course of the curriculum in the junior high and high school classroom.
This session is designed to enhance your assessment practices by thinking outside the teacher’s manual. Whether you’re a seasoned educator looking to refine your assessment strategies or a novice teacher eager to develop a framework for evaluating student progress, this session offers insights as well as practical strategies and techniques.
